About Us
Mants’ebo guest house opened its doors in 2017, ushering in a new era of quality accommodation in Mokhotlong. We offer hospitality, warmth and delicious cuisine for the business and leisure traveller.
History, culture, and a unique Lesotho experience meet here in the picturesque village of Thabang, situated in the district of Mokhotlong. With its scenic landscapes and majestic mountains, some of the nearby 3 mountain peaks rise to 2400 meters above sea level.
‘Mants’ebo Guest House is named after the Queen Regent ‘Mants’ebo Amelia Seeiso, the first and only woman to ever rule Lesotho; 1940 -1960. She was the first and senior wife of Paramount Chief Seeiso. Mants’ebo had only one child: Nts’ebo, a girl who by virtue of being female could not succeed her father. The succession to the throne according to Basotho culture, is patriarchal and goes to the first-born male child. Following Seeiso’s death Mants’ebo became regent whilst awaiting Bereng to come of age. Bereng was Seeiso’s first son born of his second wife, ‘Mabereng. He was later crowned King Moshoeshoe II and is succeeded by his son, the reigning king, Letsie III.
Some of the buildings we use are renovated rondavels, Mants’ebo and Seeiso’s other wives, two of whom (Joalane and ‘Mabatho) were siblings, lived in during both her and her husband’s reign. Our dining room built during her reign was her residence. In her honor we embrace our history and offer the warmth and hospitality for which Basotho are renowned and the comfort of a home away from home. We are also purposeful about preserving indigenous plant life and have started gardens to preserve some medicinal plants used by Basotho.
Our mouthwatering meals use vegetables planted in our gardens. We offer free range eggs and chicken (at a premium) and specialize in a mouthwatering dish of Lesotho trout or the highland goat. A variety of warm soups and locally produced condiments await you upon check in.
